CareMoor Parkland Tree Planting Day
Exmoor National Park Authority hosted a Parkland Tree Planting event on Monday, 4 December, as part of the CareMoor for Exmoor ‘Woods and Trees Appeal’.
Individuals, families, and groups came together to plant trees and contribute to the future of Exmoor's treasured landscapes.
Senior Woodland Officer Graeme McVittie said:
"Restoring historic features such as traditional parkland is one way of increasing tree covering into this landscape. Also known as ‘wood-pasture’ this is an important upland habitat which will form part of our temperate rainforest mosaic, but which depends on continued grazing."
Those dedicating trees to loved ones or special causes shared stories behind their dedications. Phil and Dawn dedicated an oak tree, saying:
"We are so glad there is such a special place for us to visit and remember loved ones. We are also very pleased that there will be such a long future for the oak and how it will provide a habitat for wildlife in the coming years."
Claire dedicated an oak tree for her husband Mike saying:
“My husband and I celebrated our wedding night at Simonsbath House Hotel over 40 years ago and very sadly he passed away last year. The tree dedication was the perfect way to celebrate ‘our very special place’”
The day highlighted the community’s connection to Exmoor’s natural beauty and shared commitment to preserving the landscape for future generations. Every tree planted represents a legacy, creating habitats for wildlife and enriching nature.
The organisers would like to thank everyone who took part.
Storm Damage
Although we are working to increase the cover on Exmoor, some of the new planting we are carrying out is simply replacing trees we have already lost, whether that be to disease, such as ash dieback, or extreme weather.
We are very sad to report that three days after the planting event, the last Scots pine already growing at the site succumbed to the extremely high winds. It was a timely reminder of how important it is to continue to plant trees and makes us extra grateful for those that donated and funded the planting.
More Events to Come in 2025
Look out for further tree planting events and initiatives in 2025 as part of the ongoing CareMoor for Exmoor 'Woods and Trees Appeal'.
Together, we can continue to nurture Exmoor’s stunning woodlands and ensure their longevity for generations to come.
