Hawkcombe Wood Heath Fritillary Butterflies and Woodland Management

Heath Fritillary
Car-park on south of A39, 400m west of cattle grid at top of Porlock Hill, TA24 8LT
Join ENPA’s Woodland Officer Graham McVittie to look at some of the coppice management work in this National Nature Reserve to help the recovery of the heath fritillary butterfly (aka the Woodman’s Follower). Graeme is a Senior Woodland Officer for Exmoor National Park Authority involved in the management of ENPA woodland including Hawkcombe for over 25 years. Graeme is a forester rather than an ecologist, so brings a practical management perspective to the recovery and conservation of this rare species.
Walk into Hawkcombe Wood National Nature Reserve to see the rare heath fritillary butterfly (weather dependent and NOT guaranteed) and understand its relationship with traditionally managed woodland.
– Dogs welcome on a lead
