Active Travel Plan for Exmoor

Active travel refers to using your own body power to get around. This includes walking, cycling, scooting, and wheelchair use. It is about making everyday journeys in a way that gets you physically active.

Exmoor National Park Authority has secured special funding from Active Travel England.  Read more about Active Travel funding . This will allow us to work with local communities to develop a plan for future active travel improvements.

These might include improving link paths within villages. It might be improving a road crossing to make it safer for walkers or horse riders to cross. Or it might be a new cycle route suitable for families or less confident cyclists.

We are working closely with the active travel teams from Somerset Council and Devon County Council along with other key stakeholders on this project.

Active travel is usually used for short trips, such as walking to the shops, cycling to work, or scooting to the park. Many of the journeys we make by car are under 5 miles, so there is a big potential to swap the car for a more active option.

Choosing active travel can offer many benefits:

  • Improved health and well-being
  • Reduced air pollution
  • Safer and more pleasant environments
  • Less traffic congestion
