Cycling
Whether on the roads or exploring the networks of bridleways , Exmoor is one of the UKs best destinations for cycling. Yes there are hills, but the rewards are view after beautiful view.
Off-road cycling
Exmoor is recognised as one of the best and most challenging off-road cycling destinations in the UK. The combination of a beautiful and varied landscape and an excellent network of bridleways, lanes and other permitted tracks provide ample opportunity for cyclists to enjoy some fantastic rides.
Ride only on permitted tracks, i.e. bridleways, restricted byways and permitted routes clearly identified on the ground or on up-to-date Ordnance Survey maps. For more information visit our 'Out and About Essentials' pages.
Give way to walkers and horses; control your speed and avoid bunching when travelling in large groups.
Announce your presence when approaching horses and walkers from the rear, to avoid startling them, ideally with a bell as it is more friendly and less startling than a shout!
Hard breaking and skidding can lead to soil erosion, particularly on the delicate moorland soils, so please brake sensibly and avoid excessively worn routes, especially during wet weather
Road Cycling
Enjoy the feel of tarmac under your wheels? With panoramic views and steep valleys to climb, Exmoor has some of the best variety of road riding in the country. There are routes available for all abilities. If you want to enjoy the network of quiet country lanes, or climb the 1705 ft to the highest point at Dunkery, there is something for everyone.
There are some great national routes that utilise just some of what Exmoor has to offer. You can find information on the West Country Way that links up Bristol and Lands End, as well as other routes for the South West on the Sustrans website. We also have a number of active and enthusiastic cycling clubs in and around Exmoor. They are a useful point of contact for local knowledge of some of the best routes and hidden gems:
