A Celebration of the Cliff Railway, the largest Steampunk and Victorian gathering in Devon. Entertainment, market stalls and much more. A day of fun and laughter, suitable for the whole family. No need to book, just turn up. Join walk leader Marion Jeffrey to explore back 150 years ago to five families who lived in a remote Somerset valley. Then, in the space of ten years, they vanished! Since relocating to Timberscombe, fifteen years ago, Marion has been captivated by the local history. She is the churchwarden and leader of the history group at Timberscombe. The remains of Clicket, including its abandoned mill, chapel house, and houses, can be reached by foot from Baker Farm north towards Timberscombe across a steep-sided valley. This is a lovely walk along a stream in gorgeous beech forest. Walking poles and walking boots are required, preferably wellies in wet weather. We will pass the quarries and the mill where its inhabitants made their living, and hear the story of life in one of Exmoor’s most remote villages. We will return by the same route, some of which is rough, with steep going and a degree of scrambling involved! There are also some low lying branches where trees have come down, so a degree of manoeuvring will be required. – Children welcome – Dogs welcome on a lead Come and Stargaze with us and Space Detectives @ the Poltimore Observatory in North Molton. Experience the darkness of Exmoor skies, enhance your knowledge and have the opportunity to look through and observe the heavens with the observatory telescopes. In the event of cloudy skies, all is not lost as we will include star hopping using a virtual sky as well as take you on a space related journey using our Virtual Reality headsets. |

Follow Walk Leader Nigel Phillips from Bossington to the shingle bank of Porlock along the coastal route. Nigel is a marine and coastal ecologist who has written three books about the coast of Somerset. Only a few National Parks in the United Kingdom can claim to have such vast coastal habitat at their disposal as Exmoor. The only salt marsh in Exmoor can be seen when strolling up the ridge at low tide. Porlock Marsh is a dynamic habitat. To investigate coastal ecosystems, including plants, birds, and coastal ecology, you will walk to Porlock shingle bank. – Children welcome – Dogs welcome on a lead |

You can work at your own pace, with plenty of opportunity for discussion, then stand back and admire your craftsmanship and enjoy a slice of cake and a hot drink for your hard work! For further information and to register for the event please contact karin@kfrench.plus.com £20pp Exmoor National Park Authority (ENPA) owns an 800-acre hill farm called Driver – the most westerly farm in Somerset. The land is high on the south facing slopes of ‘The Chains’, between Simonsbath and Challacombe. Driver will be a focus for a variety of nature recovery and heritage projects over the next 4 years. Through our 'Exmoor Pioneers' project, we will be supporting nature recovery projects such as wood pasture, flood management, and peatland restoration and habitat creation for species such as water vole and marsh fritillaries. We are also working to conserve heritage on site, such as the traditional barns, and develop new rights of way. From 11am – 1pm we will run a series of short talks and walks around locations close to the Driver farmyard. We’re still developing an exciting range of activities, which are likely to include opportunities to:
We invite you to download the iNaturalist app in advance to support nature ID activities. At 1pm we will lead a longer walk (approx. 1.5 - 2 hours) around Driver, taking in heritage sites as well as areas where nature recovery projects will be taking place. This walk will be across uneven terrain and at times off paths so sensible footwear should be worn and participants should have a reasonable level of fitness. Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Exmoor Pioneers is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with additional funding from a generous legacy from the late Cynthia Hadley to ‘CareMoor for Exmoor’ and support from BMW. Thanks to National Lottery players, over the next four years we will be able to restore and enrich nature, conserve our fragile heritage, develop skills needed to look after Exmoor, and connect people to the natural and cultural heritage of the former royal forest of Exmoor. Please note: basic toilet facilities (portaloo) will be available at the site. We will not have catering facilities, so we suggest that people who wish to stay for the full day bring a packed lunch and refreshments. |

Do you enjoy a gentle ramble over beautiful countryside, looking at things of interest along the way? If so, this is for you. Ideal for slow, non-competitive walkers. I (Victoria Eveleigh) will guide you over our fields to the open moorland of Ilkerton Ridge, chatting about farming and wildlife along the way. We can alter the route and duration of the walk according to the weather and what everyone who comes on the walk wants to do, but I'm planning to be back home at the farm by 1.00 for a BYO picnic lunch. This will be outside if the weather's good and indoors if it's raining. The route will be suitable for all-terrain mobility scooters like Trampers. Cost £5 per person. The original competitive Long Distance (50 mile) Horse Ride in the UK, The Golden Horseshoe Ride is celebrating its 60th Anniversary. Based at the Exford Showground, there will be stands and activities for everyone whilst the riders and their horses explore the wild Exmoor Landscape. Competitors must book; spectators are free with no requirement to book. Woody Bay is a bit of an Exmoor secret. At low tide a tiny sea pool/large rock pool appears, partially constructed with concrete between huge boulders. It is big enough to swim in, so provides the perfect way to try a sea swim without the waves, but with a real sense of a real adventure. The bay has all the feel of a remote desert island, with a waterfall tumbling onto the beach. We will meet above the bay to walk down steep footpaths through ancient oaks, clinging to the cliffs, down to the beach, approx 25 minute walk. Here we will make our way carefully over rocks to the sea pool, where we will immerse ourselves in the sea water left by the tide. After our dip we will share a hot drink (provided), and at our leisure embark on the slow climb back up to where we left our cars. Cost £20 per person, participants should be confident swimmers. Children over 12 accompanied by a parent or guardian may attend if they are good swimmers. Bring snacks to sustain the walk back up. @unity_dipsntrips Join Plastic Free Exmoor for an “extreme” beach clean at Greenaleigh Sand, Minehead on Saturday May 24th. Meeting in Minehead, we will walk to the beach via Culver Cliff Wood. This is approximately a 30 to 45 minute walk with some steep ascents and descents and stiles to climb over. Once there we will spend an hour and a half cleaning the beach. Most of the beach is made up of rocks and large pebbles and can be hard to walk on. Litter pickers and collecting bags will be provided. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Booking essential. For further information and to book a place on the Greenaleigh Beach Clean please email plasticfreeexmoor@gmail.com. Get outdoors this May with this family friendly trail. Find all the points and complete fun activities before claiming your flower seed prize to plant and enjoy in your own garden. £3 per trail (normal admission applies) Join the Exmoor National Park Authority team and have a look for the amazing marine-life we have, chances to spot porpoises, seals and breeding seabirds. We will have binoculars and telescopes so everyone can get a good look at whatever we find. We’ll set up a spot near the roundabout and be there for the duration. We will be near the cliffs’ edge, so children will need to be supervised at all times. Suitable footwear and clothing should be work for terrain and weather conditions.
