Facilities
At the car park at the start of the walk there are accessible public toilets, and nearby in Lynmouth a range of cafes and pubs. Watersmeet has a café and accessible toilets, and if pre-arranged (phone 01598 753 348) disabled visitors can drive to and park by the café. See the site Access statement for more details.

Terrain and surface
This is a spectacular walk, with a steady climb all the way up to Watersmeet. Due to the nature of the narrow gorge in some places path has to climb quite steeply (with steps) away from the river before descending again.  The majority of the route is along paths with a dirt and stone natural surface. A few sections are uneven with tree roots and loose stones, and the path, particularly where it crosses bare rock, can be slippery after rain. There are also some narrow sections, with unprotected drops to the river below, so please take care and wear appropriate footwear. As well as the café midway, there are regular benches where you can take a break and enjoy the view.
Overall, this popular walk is suitable for anyone with a moderate level of fitness, but not for pushchairs or mobility scooters. You can find details of a shorter more accessible walk along the lower part of the gorge on our Exmoor Strolls page.
