Route Info
The route starts from the National Trust car park near The Hunter’s Inn and takes you along the River Heddon, through woodland to the sea, seen between England’s highest cliffs. The walk is perfect for families as it passes a wild play area and it is generally accessible for rugged buggies and off-road mobility vehicles. Terrain and surface
This is a fairly flat walk following the west bank of a river valley gently descending to a viewpoint overlooking the beach. Beyond the viewpoint, the optional path down to the beach is a short descent down an uneven rocky path and across a shingle ridge.
The route returns along the other side of the valley on a path which in places is steeper and has a rougher surface, so for an easier option, you can retrace your steps back along the western side of the valley.
The National Trust has improved the surface and terrain of the entire route (and other nearby paths) to ensure that it is suitable for Tramper-off-road mobility scooters, and you can hire these from the Heddon Valley Welcome Hub at the start of the walk – visit their website to find out more. If you are using a mobility scooter, to minimise the chance of meeting a scooter coming the other way on one of the narrower sections where there is limited room to pass, it is advised to follow the route in reverse direction to that described above following the tramper way marks.
